National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Compliance

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires Federal Agencies to assess the environmental effects of their proposed actions prior to making decisions. The types of decisions requiring analysis include the approval or denial of permit applications, the adoption of federal land management actions, and the approval of the construction of highways and other publicly-owned facilities.

Following guidelines outlined in NEPA and processes developed by various federal agencies, the environmental and related social and economic effects of their proposed actions are evaluated. Depending upon the nature and complexity of the decision, the level of NEPA analysis necessary can vary from an administrative memorandum, to an environmental assessment (EA), to an extremely detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). In some cases, these evaluations are used to modify a proposed highway or facility design to better balance economic, social and environmental objectives (Context Sensitive Design).
